Love in the Time of Algos: AI Shakes Up Dating Game

Tammy Shaklee, a relationship expert and the founder of H4M, surveyed thousands of H4M singles to discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in dating. Here’s what the survey said:

  1. Half of the respondents were uncertain about the usage of AI in dating and matchmaking

  2. About 54.8% of people find AI's role in dating and matchmaking to have a neutral impact

  3. 69.8% of the users have not used AI features on dating apps, and 8.9% stated that they often find those features deceptive

  4. When asked to rate their level of concern regarding AI's role in dating, ~84.5% of respondents were slightly to very concerned

While these results show a grim picture of AI’s impact on the dating space, here is some news that restores one faith that AI can help you find your one true love:

ChatGPT turns matchmaker for man, helps him match with 5,000 women on Tinder, ultimately leading him to his current partner.

In this segment, we will explore the workings of the dating and relationship space and how AI is shaping it:

AI is transforming dating and relationships by finding highly compatible matches by analyzing your preferences and interactions. AI can even offer conversation tips and date suggestions. Plus, it works to keep the experience safe by detecting fake profiles and harmful content, ultimately enhancing your chances of finding meaningful connections.

Top Tech Companies Pioneering the AI Revolution in Dating & Relationships:

  1. Inspired by Black Mirror's Hang the DJ episode, dating services like AIMM use AI coaches that communicate with users for at least a week before suggesting matches, allowing for informed decisions and guided phone calls with dating advice.

  2. AI-driven apps like Replika and My AI Friend help users practice affection and conflict resolution, enhancing real-life relationships.

  3. Companies like Volar Dating use AI to simulate first dates, helping those with dating fatigue by using user-provided information.

  4. DNA Romance app uses AI to match couples by linking DNA samples to 16 personality types, aiming to predict romantic chemistry between two people.

  5. Apps like SciMatch and Iris Dating take unique approaches to matchmaking – SciMatch uses AI to analyze facial features for personality prediction, while Iris trains AI models on image preferences to understand a user's attraction patterns.

  6. Hornet, a queer social network, uses AI to combat catfishing by verifying user authenticity and awarding trust badges.

  7. Unique companies like Zotality blend astrology and NASA data with AI for compatibility, while Tastebuds focuses on matching users based on their shared musical preferences.

Despite its significant benefits for single individuals, AI presents substantial risks. According to this research, fraudsters are now using advanced AI like Google Gemini to create fake profiles on dating apps in a new wave of cryptocurrency scams. Also, AI carries the risk of over-reliance on algorithms over human intuition, potentially leading to missed connections.

AI dating raises privacy concerns due to extensive data collection, potential emotional manipulation by AI companions, and the risk of AI algorithms amplifying existing biases in the matching process.

Cosmopolitan asked dating influencers what they think about AI in dating apps and they were visibly and understandably torn.

We need to be mindful about what this means for the future of the internet and how much of what we see we can really believe.

Kamie Crawford, host of Catfish: The TV show and The Relationsh*t With Kamie Crawford podcast

To mitigate AI risks, dating apps like Bumble have created a tool that identifies and blocks scam accounts and fake profiles. Users can also reduce risks by prioritizing platforms with transparent data policies, being cautious of overly tailored experiences that may feel manipulative, and remaining aware of how biases might unconsciously influence their interactions.
