The office doors hissed open, the biometric scanner flashed green as it registered my expression: neutral, compliant 😐️. In an invisible female voice, it said, “Good Morning, Employee 426. Your Stress Index is elevated 😟. Mandatory meditation session initiated 🧘‍♀️.“

Today was crucial—my promotion interview! If I didn’t close my eyes and follow the AI instructor’s soothing voice to slow down my heart hammering against my ribs, it wouldn't just detect my anxiety; it would report it. I would be deemed emotionally unfit even before my interview.

That’s when my smart watch beeped indicating that my stress levels were too high and I woke up startled and drenched in sweat! I realized that the reality where our emotions were data points, constantly analyzed and judged by an unfeeling algorithm is not too far!

Emotions are no longer a mystery to the machines!

The fascinating field of Emotion AI has been all about teaching machines to read between the lines – to analyze our facial expressions, decipher our tone of voice, and even grasp the subtle nuances of our written words. It's like giving AI an EQ boost. 💟 

In this edition of our AI Alphabet, we're diving deep into Emotion AI. We'll uncover how it works, explore the surprising ways it's already being used, and tackle the thorny ethical questions it raises.

So buckle up for a rollercoaster ride through the world of digital feelings! 🎢 

EMOTION AI

Emotion AI, also known as affective computing, is a field of artificial intelligence that aims to give machines the ability to understand the full spectrum of human emotions. 

We're talking about recognizing not only basic emotions like joy, anger, and fear, but also more subtle nuances like frustration, sarcasm, and even boredom.

But how does a machine "get" emotions? It's all about data and clever algorithms. Emotion AI taps into three main sources of information:

  • Your Face Tells a Story: Facial recognition technology analyzes the tiniest movements of your facial muscles, known as micro-expressions. These fleeting expressions can reveal hidden emotions, even if you're trying to mask them.

  • Your Voice Speaks Volumes: The way you speak—your pitch, tone, speed, and even the pauses between your words—can betray your emotional state. Voice analysis algorithms pick up on these cues to gauge how you're feeling.

  • Your Words Carry Weight: Sentiment analysis doesn't just look for keywords like "happy" or "sad." It digs deeper, analyzing the overall tone and context of your words to uncover underlying emotions like excitement, anxiety, or sarcasm.

But the real magic happens when Emotion AI combines these different modalities. By analyzing your facial expressions, voice, and text simultaneously, it can paint a more accurate and nuanced picture of your emotional state. It's like having a super-sleuth who can tell when you're putting on a brave face, even if your words say you're okay.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EMOTION AI

The Foundations (1872-1997): Darwin's theories on universal emotional expressions paved the way for early research into facial coding systems (FACS) and emotional vocabulary. Rosalind Picard coined the term "Affective Computing" in 1997, setting the stage for machines understanding human emotions.

Early Exploration (1997-2013): The first emotion datasets (ISEAR) enabled early research, and SenticNet offered a resource for concept-level sentiment analysis. Researchers began annotating emotions in text and developing word embeddings, laying the foundation for NLP advancements.

APPLICATIONS OF EMOTION AI

Emotion AI isn't just a theoretical concept; it's already hard at work in our daily lives. Here are a few examples of how this technology is being used to transform various industries.

In Marketing

Ever seen an ad that just gets you? Emotion AI is helping marketers craft campaigns that resonate on a deeper level.

Companies like Entropik and Affectiva leverage AI to analyze users' reactions to ads, identifying emotional triggers and optimizing campaigns. By capturing facial expressions and biometric data, their platforms reveal what resonates most with viewers, leading to more effective, engaging, and memorable advertisements.

There is a company called Legacy TV which uses Emotion AI to figure out a TV show’s emotional vibe and add commercials that fit the mood!

Companies like YouFirst, Sightcorp, Typecast, and Synthesia offer video marketing capabilities using Emotion AI to analyze your audience’s emotions for better campaign insights, transfer emotions for better speech modulation, and create AI avatars with human emotions.

In Customer Service

Emotion AI is empowering customer service bots to analyze the tone of your voice or the sentiment in your emails, enabling them to tailor their responses accordingly. This means faster resolutions, less frustration, and maybe even a virtual shoulder to cry on.

For instance, Thelightbulb.ai is a 'Full-stack Emotion AI' platform that uses a combination of Visual AI (facial coding, & eye-tracking) and Conversational AI (speech transcription, text sentiment & audio tonality analysis) to generate real-time emotion AI & engagement analytics for digital user interactions. Another such example would be Uniphore AI.

In Gaming

Emotion AI can recognize and respond to players' emotions by analyzing their facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. This technology can create more immersive and engaging experiences by adapting gameplay to players' emotions.

Emotion AI is transforming gaming through realistic NPC interactions, dynamic storytelling, immersive VR/AR experiences, and personalized player feedback based on emotional responses.

Affectiva has built an Emotion AI plugin for Unity, a game development platform. This technology allows game developers to create more immersive experiences by analyzing players' facial expressions and adapting game elements in real time.

Erin Reynold, the maker of Nevermind, has integrated Affectiva’s plug-in into her game. Using this tech, the game can now sense how the player is feeling, and how afraid they are and adjust the difficulty based on their fear level.

💡 Nevermind is a psychological thriller game where players unlock patients' repressed memories to help them heal, experiencing and managing fear as part of the gameplay.

In Healthcare

Emotion AI is also making waves in the mental health space. By analyzing voice patterns and social media posts, it can detect early signs of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, potentially leading to earlier intervention and support.

Companies like Youper, Companion MX, Opsis (aids in mental health treatment of the elderly), and Issa are leveraging Emotion AI to transform mental healthcare. By analyzing voice patterns, facial expressions, and text interactions, these tools aid in early detection, personalized interventions, and continuous monitoring of mental health conditions.

There are many ongoing research works that analyze facial expressions, voice, and slight twitches and tremors in the body to correctly identify your mood and adjust the surrounding ambiance accordingly. For instance, it might play calming music if you're stressed or brighten the lights if you're feeling down.

In Automotive

Imagine a car that senses when you're stressed and adjusts the music or lighting to help you relax. Remember Audi’s empathetic car concept!

During the 2020 Olympics, Toyota showcased its LQ Concept EV featuring Emotion AI developed by SRI International. This technology claimed to enhance driver safety and comfort by detecting moods and responding with personalized alerts or actions, like a burst of cold air or a sudden loud noise.

Emotion AI is making this a reality, with some vehicles now equipped with in-cabin sensors that monitor driver emotions and respond accordingly.

For example, Harman Automotive's Emotion AI system uses facial recognition to analyze driver emotions, adjusting in-car settings (music, lighting) to improve comfort and safety based on detected emotional states.

In Human Resource

Emotion AI is transforming HR practices by analyzing emotions during interviews and training, detecting stress and engagement levels in employees, and offering personalized feedback for improved performance and well-being.

Companies like MorphCast Emotion AI help recruiters automate steps in the candidate selection process, so they can focus on what they can really bring value to — improving employee experience.

In Education

Emotion AI is helping educators personalize learning, boost engagement, and support student well-being. It can adapt teaching methods based on students' emotional cues, create interactive experiences, and detect early signs of mental health issues, fostering a more effective and supportive learning environment.

Hong Kong-based startup Find Solution AI's 4 Little Trees platform uses Emotion AI to monitor students' emotions and engagement during online learning, improving performance and providing personalized feedback. While privacy concerns exist, the technology has proven beneficial during the pandemic and could potentially extend its applications to businesses for enhanced online engagement.

Other Interesting Applications

  1. Researchers developed an AI-powered emotion recognition tool to assist people with neurodiverse conditions like autism.

  2. Hume AI, can interpret 53 different emotional tones and offers personalized and empathetic customer service, therapy, gaming, and companionship experiences.

  3. ZimGo Polling was the world’s first Emotion AI Election Analytics and Forecasting Service for South Korean & US Presidential Campaigns.

  4. SenTech's intelligent ring uses skin sensors to monitor employees' stress and fatigue, enabling early intervention to prevent burnout and mental health issues.

  5. Nikola, an Android Head, a part of the Guardian Robot Project, is an expressive robot that can recognize and look at the person talking using the cameras in its eyes.

THE FUTURE OF EMOTION AI

OSMO - AI with the Sense of Smell

Osmo, founded by Alex Wiltschko (ex-Google Brain scientist), is working on scent transmission to improve human health and well-being through smell! Osmo's AI turns odor molecules into digital signals and organizes them based on how they are perceived as scents.

THE GOOD, BAD, AND UGLY

AI technology has created an empathy crisis! And, before we start thinking of superintelligence, we should first focus on creating emotionally intelligent machines.

Emotion AI has endless possibilities — it can aid in empathy training and help one improve their emotional quotient. The recent Chat GPT-4o launch by OpenAI which flaunted its ability to recognize human emotions accurately, is just the first step towards AGI!

Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. As Emotion AI grows more sophisticated, we'll need to grapple with ethical questions about privacy, consent, and the potential for manipulation.
